Université de Lille is a medium-sized city in the Nord-Pas de Calais region of northern France. Lille has a strong industrial background, but is more commonly known throughout France for its handsome city centre, active cultural life and large student population. Lille is extremely well connected by train, with London, Paris, Calais, Bruges and Brussels all within easy reach. The University can be found in southern Lille, and with its dynamic vibe attracts many students on exchange.

Important information

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs September to April. 

COSTS: The cost of living in Lille will depend on your choice of accommodation and lifestyle. 

VISA: You may need to apply for a long-stay visa (more than 90 days) to study in Lille and you will be required to provide proof of sufficient funds as part of the application. The fee for the visa application is 99 EUR. Lille will provide further information on the visa application process and you can also visit the French Government webpage. You must apply for the visa early to allow plenty of time for your application to be processed ahead of your arrival in France. There can be significant delays, so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to France without it.

ACCOMMODATION: Through the application form, you can choose to stay in one of the many university halls of residence at Lille however, availability is limited. HEALTH INSURANCE: Lille advises taking out health insurance policy before you arrive in France to cover the duration of your exchange placement. In France, health insurance is free and compulsory for everyone. This social security regime is managed by the Caisse Primaire d'Assurance Maladie (CPAM).  Social security reimburses you for your health expenses. You must register with the French student social security system to benefit from the same protection as French students.
