Project Overview

The Sêr-SAM program (Science and Engineering Research: Sustainable Advanced Materials) has the overall vision of creating a truly world-class research capability for Wales in the area of next generation optoelectronics and bioelectronics. The program has been designed to address and exploit tangible technology opportunities in application areas ranging from clean energy, to sensing, through to nanohealth – all enabled by the highest quality basic science in advanced materials as measured by international benchmarks. The program recognises local excellence, existing strategic investment, and national, regional and institutional priorities.

The programme is led by Professor Paul Meredith who has been appointed as a Sêr Cymru Chair, based out of the department of Physics in Swansea University’s School of Sciences. Prof Meredith was born and raised in Swansea and is a graduate of SU Physics. He has significant international experience in academic and industrial research, innovation and start-up companies in Australia and the USA, and a strong track record of impactful policy engagement in science and the energy sector. In 2001, he established the first organic optoelectronics research activity at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, where he currently holds a Chair in Materials Physics and a prestigious Australia Research Council Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award Professorial Fellowship.
