Overview

An EngD is a four year full-time doctoral level programme. The four-year scheme consists of taught modules and an industry led research project.

Research Project

The research project is undertaken as a partnership between the collaborating company and Swansea University. The project is based on a real engineering problem and will be defined by the industrial partner. It will be challenging and innovative in its content.

As a Research Engineer on the EngD programme, you will spend at least 50% of your time with the collaborating company on the research project. You will usually begin the research project within six months of the start of the EngD programme.

At the end of the EngD programme, a thesis of no more than 100,000 words is submitted, which demonstrates original research that contributes significantly to the subject area, and assessment in the form of an oral examination (viva).

Entry requirements

An EngD at Swansea University is suitable for graduates with an Engineering or relevant Physical Sciences degree with a minimum level of 2:1, or with a relevant Masters level qualification.

Some of our projects have been made possible by funding from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and the European Social Fund (ESF) 2014-2020 West Wales and the Valleys Operational Programme, which is managed by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEF).  If this is the case, you will need to ensure that you meet their eligibility criteria.
