About

Professor Andrew Grant qualified in medicine in 1983 and practised as a GP for 34 years. An increasing proportion of his career in the last 25 years has been in medical education.

Professor Grant's senior, strategic position in medical education was recognised when he was made a principal fellow of the higher education academy in 2018.

He completed his masters in health professions education in Masstricht, NL. And then completed a PhD exploring reflective learning in undergraduate medical education.

As a year director and Dean of Medical education he became aware of the number of medical students who were suffering with severe mental health conditions and further recent research has been focussed on the provision of support for medical students and junior doctors with mental illness. In 2012 he led a team of researchers who were commissioned by the General Medical Council to explore sources of support for medical students with mental health conditions. The final report formed the basis of the GMC’s guidance for medical students on this subject.

Taught Modules

PM-M26 Simulation and elearning

This module aims to develop participants¿ skills in developing and evaluating educational resources and techniques using learning technologies, primarily elearning and simulation. Through engagement in theoretical and practical activities and reflection, participants will enhance their own educational practice and that of others using learning technologies.
PMEM01 Integrated Portfolio

This module enables students to create a portfolio of assignments to support their entry into the research phase of their doctorate. They prepare a detailed plan for their research, supported by evidence and a reflective commentary, building upon assignments completed for PMRM06, 07 and 08. Part time students complete this module in year 2 of the programme. Full time students complete in year 1, alongside the aforementioned modules.
PMXM06 Dissertation/Project for PA Studies

This module is aimed at Physician Associate Studies students who wish to proceed from successful completion of the Post graduate Diploma in Physician Associate Studies to a full Master¿s degree. This dissertation module provides an opportunity for the student to undertake an extensive piece of academic writing based on a small scale but original piece of research or a clinical project or audit conducted by the student. The module offers the student a choice of assessments which will reflect the student¿s ongoing career choice and employment status. This module can be offered on both full time and part time basis.
