About

Dr Ashra Khanom is a Senior Research Fellow in Health Services Research at Swansea University, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. She is also a researcher for PRIME Centre Wales, the research centre focusing on primary and emergency care, funded by Health and Care Research Wales to develop and coordinate research proposals and support researchers http://www.primecentre.wales/.

Ashra’s main research interests lie in the area of prevention and early intervention addressing health inequities and unequal access to health care use using linked health data, novel patient and public involvement and engagement, and collaboration with the NHS, third sector organisations and international partners in Morocco and Tunisia. Ashra’s research with asylum seekers and refugees (HEAR study) forms part of the British Medical Association (BMA) Refugee and asylum seeker patient health toolkit2. She has been awarded the Health and Care Research Wales Public Involvement and Engagement Award and Swansea University’s Research and Innovation Early Career Researcher Award.

Outside of work Ashra is a treasurer and trustee of Neath Port Talbot BME Association and works closely with MIND Neath Port Talbot on projects to improve the wellbeing of people living in her community. She contributed to the Welsh Government’s Health and Social Care Committee report 'Connecting the dots: tackling mental health inequalities in Wales' on 19 December 2022

PM-263 Health Services Research: The module encourages students to describe and articulate key concepts, theories, and terminology underpinning Health Services Research.

PM-344 Capstone Project: The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences and will allow students to refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate-level.

PM-006 Foundation to health data and its application

The module aims to provide a student with an understanding of data and information. It will examine what information is, how it is collected, manipulated, presented and interpreted and why data driven decision making is a much more subjective process than it might appear. The primary aim is to provide a strong foundation of ideas that will properly prepare students for further study. The secondary aim is provide some of the skills necessary to manipulate and manage data.
PM-263 Health Services Research

Health Services Research is essential to find out which treatments work better for patients. It plays an important role in discovering new treatments, and making sure that we use existing treatments in the best possible ways. Research can find answers to things that are unknown, filling gaps in knowledge and changing the way that healthcare professionals work. Ensuring that research is an integral part of Health Services also encourages all professionals to question and rationalise clinical management and creates a culture of continual learning and development. It assists professionals to learn more about their chosen area, to have confidence in the treatments they are offering and to learn from their patients. This module covers the scope of Health Services Research, considers what is needed to make it good quality, and explores how it can make a difference to patients, clinicians and policy makers.

Public Engagements

I have extensive experience in public engagement and involvement in research in particular with under-represented groups. For example, I have worked with Peer Researchers in the HEAR1 and HEAR2 studies to engage with people seeking sanctuary. My current project CYMELL on improving uptake of diabetes checks and BE SURE, comparing injury presentation to emergency services by ethnicity also involves 3^rd sector organisations and Peer Researchers.
