Respiratory and Sleep Physiology
This module introduces students to the clinical practice of respiratory physiology, forming part of the BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science programme within the division of cardiovascular, respiratory, and sleep sciences. It provides a foundation in the structure and function of the respiratory system, the control of breathing and sleep, and how these systems are affected by disease.
Students will explore the pathophysiology of obstructive, restrictive, and mixed respiratory conditions, including obstructive sleep apnoea and central sleep apnoea. The module also covers relevant pharmacology and therapeutics, such as the use of bronchodilators, steroids, oxygen therapy, and the principles of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment.
Practical elements include diagnostic investigations like lung function testing, pulse oximetry, and sleep studies, alongside an introduction to the instrumentation used in respiratory diagnostics. Core clinical practice topics such as calibration, infection control, communication, data protection, and clinical reporting are also covered, helping students develop the skills and professional behaviours required for safe and effective practice.

Introduction to Nursing and Health Care (Adult)
This module is your first step into the dynamic and deeply rewarding world of nursing. You will explore what it truly means to be a nurse, and this is not just in terms of clinical skills, but through the values and principles that shape the profession. Guided by the NMC¿s The Code, you will begin to understand the ethical, personal, and socio-political dimensions of care, and how they apply across the lifespan and all four fields of nursing. It¿s about building a foundation of knowledge and compassion that will carry you through your career.
You will also be supported as you transition into university life, with a focus on developing the study skills and learning strategies that will help you thrive. From day one, you will start building the habits of a lifelong learner, with the ultimate goal of improving care for service users and their families. Along the way, you will begin to explore how to communicate effectively with patients, carers, and fellow professionals including the skills that are just as vital as clinical expertise.
And yes, you will get hands-on. This module introduces you to recognising when a patient is unwell and responding safely and appropriately. You will start developing the confidence to act, the knowledge to back it up, and the professional attitude that sets great nurses apart. If you are ready to make a difference, this is where it begins, with a module that¿s designed to inspire, challenge, and prepare you for the journey ahead.
