Dr Arron Lacey is a Lecturer in Health Data Science and Natural Language Processing at the Swansea University Medical School. Dr Lacey has been based in the SAIL Databank at the Medical School since 2011 following a BSc in Physics, MScs in Computer Science and a PhD in Healthcare Studies at Swansea University.
Dr Lacey is currently module lead for the following modules:

PM-365 Introduction to Machine Learning in Healthcare (BSc Population Health)
PM-402 Machine Learning in Healthcare (MSc Health Data Science)
Dr Lacey leads Natural Language Processing research at SUMS which aims to use a range of techniques including machine learning, programming and software architecture to automate the process of converting unstructured clinical texts into structured databases.
Dr Lacey has published extensively using the SAIL Databank in the areas of cardiovascular disease and epilepsy population health. Dr Lacey is also interested in using bioinformatics and routinely collected data towards precision medicine research.
Dr Lacey has collaborated with King’s College London, Imperial College London and Oxford University in Natural Language Processing research.
This module introduces students to some of the foundational principles, theories and case studies relating to digital health systems and applications within a population health context. It builds upon and develops the students' knowledge of the growing role of digital technologies in Health Systems, and Health and Social Care service provision. The focus of this module will be on the application of technologies for digital health, for example what are the facilitators and barriers to successful digital health initiatives, and why do some digital health projects fail? This module will not include the development of data science or coding skills, but will develop knowledge, understanding and critical thinking concerning digital technologies and healthcare applications, thus there is an emphasis on sociological perspectives.
This module introduces the fundamental principles and methods of health data science. Students will gain an appreciation of the increasingly prominent role of the health data science in research and clinical application.

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.
Data scientists working in healthcare are called to deal with problems involving classification and pattern recognition. The objective of this module is to provide the essential theory and practical aspects of widely used machine learning software.
In this module, students will focus on the broader definition of health, advanced therapies and the complexities of patient care. The module will continue to build on the foundational-science-based knowledge and clinical skills developed in Years 1 to 3, and will delve deeper into population health, future medicines, and complex clinical scenarios. This module encourages further development of transferable skills and application of prior knowledge into progressively complex scenarios. This learning will be supported by robust contextualisation of science into pharmacy practice and working with other healthcare professionals (interprofessional education) through multi-disciplinary teaching & learning.
