Neurosensory Science
This module provides an introduction to aspects of basic science which underpin the professions within Neurosensory Science. You¿ll explore the principles of acoustics and psychoacoustics. Core concepts will be covered like sound creation and propagation, sound pressure levels and sound perception. Topics such as binaural hearing, masking, calibration, psychoacoustic methods, signal detection theory, as well as impedance, are covered to build a comprehensive understanding of auditory science.
In visual psychophysics, you¿ll examine the laws of reflection and refraction, the properties of prisms, lenses, spheres and cylinders, and the optics of the eye. You¿ll also explore errors of refraction, contrast sensitivity, and visual perception, gaining insight into how the visual system interprets and responds to stimuli.
The neurophysiology component of the module introduces the basics of electricity and electronics as applied to clinical neurophysiology. You¿ll learn about volume conduction, waveforms, artefacts, and sources of interference, helping you understand how electrical signals are measured and interpreted in a clinical setting.
By the end of the module, you¿ll have a solid grounding in the scientific principles that support clinical practice in auditory, visual, and neurophysiological healthcare science.

Audiological Practice 1
This module is tailored for students enrolled in the part-time Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) in Healthcare Science (Audiology), offering a focused exploration of clinical audiology practice. You¿ll develop a strong understanding of hearing assessment techniques, hearing device provision, and the principles of vestibular assessment and rehabilitation. The module blends theoretical foundations with practical application, preparing you to support patients with hearing and balance disorders in a variety of clinical settings.
You¿ll study a range of audiological assessment approaches, learning how to interpret results and apply them to individual care plans. The module also covers the history, theory, and clinical measurements associated with hearing aids, helping you understand how devices are selected, fitted, and evaluated for effectiveness. Through case-based learning and hands-on experience, you¿ll gain confidence in managing hearing loss and supporting communication needs.
In addition, you¿ll explore vestibular assessment and rehabilitation, developing the skills to identify and address balance-related conditions. By the end of the module, you¿ll be equipped to contribute meaningfully to audiology services, combining technical expertise with patient-centered care to improve quality of life for those with hearing and vestibular challenges.
The module is delivered and assessed over the entirety of level 5; thus, commencing in semester 1 of year 1 and concluding in semester 2 of year 2.

Audiological Science and Rehabilitation 1
This module is designed for students undertaking the part-time Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) in Healthcare Science, with a focus on audiology. It explores the core concepts of audiological science, including the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the ear. You¿ll examine how hearing loss affects speech production, perception, and intelligibility, and gain insight into the broader implications of auditory health across the lifespan.
You¿ll also study lifespan development theory, learning how hearing loss can influence cognitive, emotional, and social development from childhood through to older adulthood. The module introduces industrial audiology, helping you understand how workplace environments impact hearing and how preventative strategies are applied. These topics are linked to the theory of aural rehabilitation, giving you the tools to support patients in managing hearing loss effectively.
By the end of the module, you¿ll be equipped to apply scientific knowledge to real-world audiological practice, considering both clinical and psychosocial perspectives. Whether you're assessing hearing, supporting communication, or planning rehabilitation strategies, this module prepares you to deliver thoughtful, patient-centred care in a variety of settings.
The module is predominantly taught during semester 2 and 3 of year 1, but assessed during semester 1 of year 2.

Introduction to Audiology Practice I
If you¿re beginning your journey into the world of audiology, this core module is your essential first step. Specifically designed for students enrolled in the CertHE in Basic Audiological Practice, it provides a solid introduction to both the scientific and practical elements of audiological care¿preparing you for a future role as an Assistant or Associate Audiology Practitioner.
Throughout the module, you¿ll be introduced to fundamental audiological tests and procedures, including pure-tone audiometry, hearing aid repairs and otoscopy. You¿ll begin developing hands-on skills in equipment handling, patient interaction, and test preparation¿skills that are essential for supporting patients across a variety of hearing healthcare settings.
But audiology doesn¿t exist in isolation¿it¿s part of a wider, dynamic healthcare system. This module also helps you build core professional skills that will support your development across your career. You¿ll gain confidence in areas such as:
