Modern Languages - Introduction to Language Teaching
This module is your starting point on the teaching pathway of the BA in Modern Languages. Over the course of the semester, you¿ll explore the key theories behind language acquisition, design meaningful learning activities, reflect on the role of both teachers and learners, and connect what you study to real-life teaching practice. You will also reflect on the ways in which motivation, technology, feedback, and classroom context all shape the language learning process.
Towards the end of the module, you will plan and deliver your own short language lesson: within a supportive environment, you will put theory into practice, experiment with teaching techniques, and build your confidence - even if you've never taught before.
By the end of the module, you¿ll have a solid understanding of what makes language teaching effective, and you¿ll be ready to develop your skills further in more advanced teaching and pedagogy modules.

Introduction to Studying Languages for Business Students
This module is an introduction to language learning for business students enrolled onto the languages¿ pathway. The students will take part in taster sessions for each language offered at beginner¿s level and will gain insight into business related matters of countries in which the languages are spoken. This module is the culmination of advanced level study of German which will equip students with the skills needed to communicate orally and in writing at a near-native level. This module aims to consolidate and extend the language skills developed by students from the beginners and advanced language pathways. It concentrates on developing clarity, fluency, organisation, structure and accuracy in written and spoken German, establishing a firm understanding of the finer points of the language relating to grammar and discourse, and extending students¿ vocabulary to read, write, and speak about issues related to contemporary German society and culture. Classes are mainly conducted in German. It is typically taken in conjunction with MLG301B.

German General Language 3B
This module offers practice and development of skills in translation from English into German at an advanced level, as well as German oral and communication skills. Writing and oral classes will give you practice in the exercises covered by the module. Following an integrated teaching approach you will also be able to reinforce and expand your existing grammatical knowledge in a series of grammar workshops. One hour per week is dedicated to oral practice, further increasing your speaking and listening skills. You are expected to take part in class discussions with a native speaker of German based on written texts, audio and video materials. All classes are conducted mainly through the medium of the target language. In addition to class work, students are expected to undertake extensive private study.

Community Interpreting
Community Interpreting is a broad term that includes Public Service Interpreting (PSI) but also covers informal or semi-formal settings within the community. Typical contexts where community interpreting takes place include local community events, cultural gatherings, and grassroots advocacy. It emphasizes accessibility and inclusion for minority language speakers and typically involves cultural mediation and relationship-building. Whilst it can be less formal than PSI, it still requires professionalism and adherence to ethical standards.
In this module you will learn techniques and develop strategies for performing dialogue interpreting between parties who do not speak each other's language. There will typically be a mixture of short interactive lectures on relevant aspects of interpreting theory and practice, to complement live bilingual and multilingual scenarios, and language laboratory practical sessions.

Healthcare Interpreting
Healthcare interpreting plays an essential role in facilitating communication between healthcare providers and patients who speak different languages or have limited proficiency in the language used by the provider, thus ensuring that all patients have access to the medical information and services they need.
Healthcare interpreters work in various settings, including doctor¿s offices, hospitals, clinics, and mental health facilities, and they require a sound knowledge of medical terminology in both languages, as well as a good understanding of cultural differences that might affect communication in order to interpret accurately and in a culturally appropriate way.
In this module you will develop strategies and techniques to perform simultaneous whispering interpreting and dialogue interpreting (including some telephone interpreting, plus an opportunity to try sight translation) in the domain of healthcare. There will be a mixture of interactive lectures on interpreting theory, ethics, and practice, together with live and language laboratory practice sessions on the topic of various conditions and diseases.

Conference Interpreting
This module will help students develop strategies and techniques to perform Conference Interpreting in Consecutive as well as Simultaneous modalities, with a focus on the latter. It involves the advanced development of multilingual skills, as well as interpersonal/intercultural communication skills (active listening, memory retention, time lag, anticipation, reformulation, delivery). Students will typically be exposed to authentic talks, lectures, conference papers, debates and speeches delivered by United Nations delegates, European Parliamentarians, TED.com Presenters, the UK's Political Speech Archive, BBC World programmes, YouTube, The Why Channel, and other countries' politicians, lecturers and experts in various fields. The contexts would typically include current affairs and topics of political, sociocultural, economic, scientific, technological and environmental impact in both cultures and their corresponding terminologies. Students will also be encouraged to research and read parallel texts for confidence building knowledge expansion and glossary creation. Training will take place in a fully-equipped Interpreting Suite (delegate units and booths).
Successful candidates will be well prepared to apply for placement opportunities at the European Commission Directorate-General for Interpretation and/or The Internship Programme at the United Nations Offices either in Geneva or in New York.
Students will be expected to do extensive guided private study, which should include exercises, e.g. mental agility exercises, bi-directional clozing, numerical contextualization and simplification tasks, reformulation and improvisation exercises, as well as tasks for mnemonic activation (to activate and automatize linguistic reflexes through the use of synonyms, antonyms, definitions, paraphrasing, hypernyms etc.).

Semester Abroad at Technische Hochschule Köln
This module is only available to students who have successfully completed Year 1 of the Extended MA Professional Translation / Translation & Interpreting Programme. This module, is made up of approved modules totalling 30 ECTS selected from the portfolio offered by the host institution, the Technische Hochschule Köln (THK). This partner is responsible for all teaching and assessment. Module marks are returned to Swansea, converted, weighted proportionally to credit and combined into a single composite mark.
