Claire obtained a BSc in Physiology from Cardiff University, and was awarded a PhD from Swansea University Medical School for investigating alkane and fatty acid metabolism by Candida CYP52s. She has a keen interest in cytochromes P450, antifungal resistance, and alkane and fatty acid metabolism.
This module will provide the student with an overview of the fundamentals of microbiology, its causative role in human disease and the intervention of antimicrobials and antibiotics. The role of immunity and its role in human defence against disease will also be introduced in this module, and how this may be modulated in response to pathogens. Lectures will be accompanied by a practical session in microbiological techniques and an essay with academic support. This module introduces students into the small intricate world of microbiology and its implications for human health and disease. It will explore the microbial universe from the living (bacteria and fungi) to the non-living (viruses and bacteriophage). Starting with fundamental concepts, students will learn about these organisms and how they differ from their eukaryotic counterparts in their cellular and genetic structures. The ability of microorganisms to cause human disease will be explored through key example organisms. This module will then go on to explore the beneficial sides of microbiology, and how we can manipulate microorganisms for the production of beneficial products. Through a combination of lectures and laboratory sessions, students will gain insights into the fundamentals of microbiology through key example microorganisms with a focus on human disease. Students that complete this module will be equipped with a general overview of the field of microbiology.
¿Nothing in science has any value if it is not communicated¿ (Anne Roe, 1904-1991). An important aspect of the role of scientists concerns the communication of complex scientific ideas and research to both scientist and non-scientist audiences. This module will build upon and explore methods of science communication, including journal papers, abstracts, podcasts (digital audio files), and posters. Students will also be introduced to science communication methods for non-scientist audiences, including public events and health campaigns. Students will be required to write and deliver a journal club podcast, and design an evidence-based public health awareness campaign.
The modern scientist graduate is expected to have gained extensive laboratory-based experience and this is certainly essential for any student intent on pursuing a research-based career. Skills for Researchers provides students with the opportunity to acquire the core skills to be able to conduct, analyse, interpret and present scientific experiments. A proportion of the module will be spent in the laboratory gaining hands-on experience. Skills acquired in this module will form the basis for future experimental work, including the final year project. Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback to peers and engage with a variety of online learning materials.
This module will allow students to review, appraise and evaluate the application of the professional development practice gained throughout their course.

The role of biomedical sciences in the delivery and provision of health care will be explored and critically evaluated within this module. This module is designed to provide you with the fundamental and principal concepts of Health Care, specifically to support the role of Biomedical Science, from understanding the principles and organization of the NHS to exploring valued based healthcare. It will provide learning activities based around the various disciplines within biomedical science(s) within health care, explore the importance of IBMS and HCPC practice standards, understanding the patient experience, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and to critically explore professionalism within healthcare delivery.
This module will explore the key clinical biochemical principles that are relevant to the application of the principles of clinical biochemistry to evaluate the function of the various physiological systems, the biochemistry of the processes involved that support life; from the cellular to whole physiological systems and explore how clinical biochemistry can detect pathological dysfunction. It will critically develop your understanding of the various biochemical processes involved in the analytical detection of function and dysfunction within health and disease states across the life span.
