Dr Chen Xu received her PhD in Economics from Cardiff University in 2018. She had worked as a full-time Research Fellow and Research Associate at Sussex University and Cardiff University before joined Swansea University as a Lecturer.
Her research interests lie in Regional Economics, Industrial Economics including digital economy, semiconductor clusters, economic impact of tourism industries, and Welsh Economy.
Dr Chen Xu has been involved in a few funded research projects that are focused on Welsh regional economy, including a £1.5m ERDF funded Superfast Broadband project and the £43m UKRI funded CSConnected Semiconductor project. She is currently Principal Investigator of ONS funded “Measuring the Digital economy: A pilot Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Satellite Account for Wales” project, and Co-investigator on the ESRC funded “Low Carbon Community, Low Carbon Economy: Building the Re-localised, Sustainable and Prosperous South Wales Valleys” project.
She has published on quality academic journals including Regional Studies, Annals of Tourism Research Empirical Insights, Local Economy, Welsh Economic Review and contributed to various monographs. She is also carrying out a range of further research projects that look at digital technologies and UK manufacturing firms’ servitization, entrepreneurial ecosystem of Cardiff City Region, European semiconductor industry strategy, Welsh tourism forecasting, etc.
She is additionally well trained in Stata programming and CGE modelling with GAMs, and she has had extensive experiences with large amount of ONS and HMRC individual level confidential datasets. Dr Chen Xu would be particularly interested in developing further research ideas, opportunities, and projects to put such experiences, skills, and knowledge into best use.
