About

Dr Lowthian is a Lecturer at Swansea University in the Department of Education and Childhood Studies, School of Social Sciences. She completed her PhD at DECIPHer, Cardiff University in 2021, and previously was employed by Health Data Research UK at Swansea University.

Her research interests involve using quantitative research methods to answer important questions regarding child health and wellbeing. Her current research interests surround adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), the secondary harms of parental substance use, and vulnerable children (e.g. looked-after children). Within these, she is interested in the contribution of parenting, the family environment, and socioeconomic inequalities as potential modifying factors. Her methodological expertise lies in quantitative methods, specifically structural equation modelling (SEM) and other more advanced techniques (survival analysis, fixed/random effects). She also has experience in using both administrative data (SAIL and UKDA secure lab) and cohort data (e.g., ALPSAC, MCS).

Her teaching interests are largely in quantitative research methods and aim to develop students’ skills in this area to apply it to their own research interests. However, she also has taught child health and well-being inequalities to an array of learners and is developing teaching in the areas of childhood adversity. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and can offer teaching in the areas of quantitative research methods, advanced quantitative research methods, child health and wellbeing, including adversity and inequalities. She is open to supervising postgraduate and undergraduate in these areas.

She is also a basic Welsh speaker.
