• ALE108 Language Teaching Methodology

  This module provides an introduction to the practice and theory of teaching language skills and systems (e.g. reading, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, etc.) to language learners in instructed settings.

• ALE200 Language Teaching in Context

  Students will advance their knowledge of essential principles and methodologies for language teaching, with a particular focus on developing awareness of the different needs of language learners in a variety of contexts. Students will critically evaluate pedagogical approaches in relation to learner needs and learn to adapt language lessons in order to meet those learners¿ needs. While the focus will be on English language teaching, the principles can be applied more broadly to the learning of other languages.

• ALE325 Applied Linguistics Dissertation

  In this module, students will conduct an empirical research project in Applied Linguistics under supervision. The first semester includes a number of skills-building lectures and seminars, while the second semester includes mainly the individual or small group meetings with the dissertation supervisor. Students collect and analyse data, and write up their projects in an 8,000 word dissertation.

• ALED00 Professional Reflective Practice

  Students will produce a portfolio of language teaching products including a detailed profile of a learner, materials for English language teaching and materials for English language testing. This module requires candidates to apply the theoretical aspects of English language teaching to classroom practice.

• ALEM22 Communicative Language Teaching

  The module covers basic principles, philosophy and the historical development of learning and theory of language learning leading to the communicative approach to language teaching. It addresses the current debate about methods and methodologies in the context of English as an international language.

ALE108 Language Teaching Methodology

ALE200 Tools for English Language Teaching

What are some of the factors involved in modern English as a Foreign Language teaching? Students will engage with the essential principles and methodologies for EFL teaching. This will advance their knowledge of the variety of pedagogical approaches relevant to EFL in the classroom. Students will also critically engage with the English language in terms of grammar, lexis and phonology with reference to learner perception of these features.

ALE318 Research Project (Linguistics)
