Dr James Murray is a Senior Lecturer in autophagy and ageing diseases. With a background in molecular immunology and cell signalling his group investigates mechanisms of how the autophagy pathway become altered during ageing and in ageing related pathologies such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.
Biochemistry and cell biology, including signalling pathways, enzyme regulation, membrane trafficking and drug discovery.
His research expertise is in mechanisms of cell signalling. His background is in protein and lipid kinase regulation and currently the lab is working on mechanisms of autophagy signalling and how these are compromised during ageing and the development of cancer, neurodegenerative disease and diabetes. Other areas of interest include autophagy in immunity and pathogenic infections, including coronaviruses (SARS and SARS-CoV2).
This module is designed to develop the skills required for students of biochemistry and genetics degree programmes. Students meet with their tutors and will be given a series of assignments designed to develop skills in key areas such as essay writing, presentations and general numeracy.
The module will provide a sound theoretical basis to a comprehensive range of biomolecular techniques currently employed in molecular genetics and biochemistry. Particular emphasis is placed on DNA recombinant technology, next generation sequencing, transcriptomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry.

The modern scientist graduate is expected to have gained extensive laboratory-based experience and this is certainly essential for any student intent on pursuing a research-based career. Skills for Researchers provides students with the opportunity to acquire the core skills to be able to conduct, analyse, interpret and present scientific experiments. A proportion of the module will be spent in the laboratory gaining hands-on experience. Skills acquired in this module will form the basis for future experimental work, including the final year project. Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback to peers and engage with a variety of online learning materials.
The course is designed to provide an advanced study of the identification of human genes and the determination of the influence of human genes upon disease and health status. Gene identification provides targets for the development of new pharmaceuticals and the range of variation present in the population.
The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.
The course is designed to provide an advanced study of the underlying principles of human ageing. It will begin with the impact of ageing on health care at a societal level, then will focus on ageing at individual levels, through to the molecular basis of ageing and ageing-related diseases, and end with the future potential of interventions that modify human ageing.
The module is for students to build on their previous knowledge, skills and experience by undertaking a laboratory based or suitable non-laboratory based project on a specific subject related to genomics.
This MSc Medical Neuroscience module will study the processes involved in brain degeneration and repair. We will review disease pathology and diagnosis, the cellular and molecular basis of disease, and possible new therapies aimed at restoring brain function, including cell replacement strategies. Content will involve lectures, tutorials, expert guest seminars and workshops.
