About

Professor Owen Sheers is an award-winning poet, author and playwright with a particular interest in creating ground-breaking hybrid works drawing upon a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative approach. He is the author of two poetry collections, two novels, three verse dramas and multiple works for TV, film and theatre. His 2016 film-poem The Green Hollow, about the Aberfan disaster was BAFTA and Grierson nominated and won three BAFTA Cymru awards including Best Writer. Twice winner of Wales Book of the Year he was the recipient of the 2016 St Davids Award for culture and the 2018 Wilfred Owen Poetry award. Forthcoming writing projects include a BBC drama about the 2010 Climategate affair, an environmental opera with Welsh National Opera, a children’s book dealing with loss and grief and a new novel.

As Professor in Creativity at Swansea University Owen’s mission is to encourage interdisciplinary creative collaborations across colleges and faculties, with a particular emphasis on projects addressing the current climate and ecological crises.

In 2019 Professor Sheers launched the Swansea University Cultural Institute Creativity Fellowships, through which two artists of any discipline are invited and funded to collaborate with Swansea University academics to create new works of art from cutting edge university research.

In 2021 he will co-curate with Taliesin Arts Centre Everything Change, two days of interdisciplinary events, talks and performances around creativity and the climate crisis.

Professor Sheers also curates and chairs an annual series of lectures and talks by creative people from all areas of expertise and interest, The Centenary Lecture Series.
