Dr Richard Fern has more than 35 years’ experience in journalism and public relations with bylines ranging from the Guardian to Esquire. He has worked in both full-service agencies and in-house for a number of household name brands including JCB and Durex. He has also worked as Press Officer and Media Campaigner both in the university sector and for charities such as Oxfam and Greenpeace.
His research addresses the role of public relations in policing and activism, addressing issues of climate change and sustainability, as well as the role of campaigning and the reporting of protest. His PhD looked at police public relations.
His writing has been published in six continents, he says he’s working on Antarctica.
Richard is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has lectured at a number of universities. He has spoken at a wide range of national and international conferences, and continues to be active as a journalist and public relations practitioner, as well as a media-trainer.
He lectures in digital media and public relations. He is department lead for the foundation year programme, and he is the Department’s Academic Integrity Officer.
