Vivienne’s research interests fall into two main areas of psycholinguistics and second language acquisition:

Firstly, she is interested in the link between learning vocabulary as a driver for the acquisition of syntactic features.

Secondly, the role of language learning aptitude and working memory in instructed second language acquisition. To this end, she has been working on the development of the LLAMA aptitude tests with Prof Paul Meara (lognostics.co.uk).

As a former French and German school teacher, Vivienne is also keen to develop her research in terms of practical implications for language teaching pedagogy.

ALE123 Language in Mind

This module introduces the field of psycholinguistics and its concerns; how do we produce and understand spoken language? What sort of errors we make and why? How is language stored in the brain in first and second languages? We will also look at the effects of various disorders that affect language.
ALE226 Psycholinguistics of Bilingualism

What happens in your mind when you learn a second or subsequent language? How does this compare to when you learn your first language. This module looks at how we process multiple languages, the interactions between them and factors that might influence how we comprehend and produce language.
