Stella, or Xuehong He in Chinese, received her Ph.D. in Second Language Studies from Michigan State University, USA.

Her teaching experience has come from the United States and Japan, where she taught courses in applied linguistics and in Chinese and English as foreign languages.

Stella’s research interests include Instructed Second Language Acquisition, Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition, and Second Language Psycholinguistics.

She mainly adopts cognitive and psycholinguistic approaches (e.g., eye-tracking) to investigate instructional issues and individual differences, with special attention to vocabulary learning and teaching.

ALE227 Research Methods and Tools for Applied Linguistics

This module equips students to engage effectively with tools used by applied linguists for data collection, scrutiny, and analysis. These will include software for building, interrogating and comparing language corpora (corpus tools), for transcribing and annotating video/audio data, and for measuring various dimensions of language texts. We will also cover basic concepts of computer programming, and compare statistical analysis programmes.
ALE233 Second Language Vocabulary Studies

This module will introduce students to the main topics in second language vocabulary studies, including understanding vocabulary, approaches to teaching and learning vocabulary, measuring knowledge of vocabulary, and key issues in researching second language vocabulary acquisition.
ALE325 Applied Linguistics Dissertation

In this module, students will conduct an empirical research project in Applied Linguistics under supervision. The first semester includes a number of skills-building lectures and seminars, while the second semester includes mainly the individual or small group meetings with the dissertation supervisor. Students collect and analyse data, and write up their projects in an 8,000 word dissertation.
ALEM18 Vocabulary: teaching and learning

In this module we will explore the nature of vocabulary and the difficulties associated with defining and categorizing the "Word". We will examine and identify word components, and look at the ways in which larger language chunks or groups of words- sometimes behave like single vocabulary items. We will analyse what is meant by word knowledge and the various facets of this and in the light of this whether it is realistic to measure how many words a person knows. We will look at models of the L2 lexicon and use this as a basis for the investigation of the manner in which to teach the reading, writing, listening and speaking of foreign language lexis.
ALEM20 Second Language Acquisition

How do you learn a second language? What processes are involved? What is the role of the first language? In this module, students will engage with these questions among others. Students will critically evaluate different theories of second language acquisition including what knowledge we have at the outset of the acquisition process and how we develop. Students will also examine different factors that may influence how successful a language learner becomes, including motivation, aptitude etc. We will read empirical studies that have sought to examine different studies and we will critically evaluate their results. The different methods of assessment will require students to critical evaluate research papers, analyse second language learner data and use this to support their arguments.
