What are your top 3 favourite things about Swansea (the city/area)?

I love bike riding down Mumbles, all the amazing beaches nearby (such as Three Cliffs and Rhossili) and Joe’s Ice Cream.

Why did you choose to study your degree at Swansea?

I attended an open day with my parents before deciding to study at Swansea back in 2019. The enthusiasm and energy from the Criminology lecturers/ department was unmatched and confirmed my decision to apply.

What is your favourite thing about your course?

My favourite thing about studying a bachelor’s in psychology and criminology is that it covered both my interest in the human mind/ behaviour and in crime/ the criminal justice system.

If you are a Joint Honours student – why did you choose to study Joint Honours, and what is your experience?

I chose to study a joint honours degree because it has the potential to open many doors for you in the future in terms of career prospects whether that will be more related to the Psychology field or Criminology field.

What are you planning/hoping to do after you graduate?

I am currently still in Swansea undertaking a master’s course in Forensic Psychology which is amazing and is the first step to my career goal of becoming a Forensic Psychologist in the future.

Would you recommend Swansea University to other students? Why?

I have had nothing but positive experiences being a student at Swansea and the opportunities are endless if you put yourself out there. I enjoyed my time so much that I continued my postgraduate study here.

Have you undertaken a work placement as part of your course (Year in Industry)?

No year in industry but I did have the opportunity through the Criminology department to be an intern with Crimestoppers to promote their ‘Fearless’ campaign to young people.

Why did you want to get involved in volunteering/ internships?

I wanted to gain more employability skills, I have worked in a court setting volunteering and wanted to try out a different area to improve my skills and experience. Crimestoppers stood out to me because their campaigns are essential for raising awareness about rising crime issues in the local areas, something which I am passionate about.

How did you find the experience of the internship?

I found the experience of the internship very valuable and insightful to learn about this area of work, I enjoyed educating young people on the consequences of crime and helping them understand different concepts, overall, it was a good experience.

What advice would you give to students looking to get involved in internships?

Do not underestimate the power of doing an internship and what doors it can open for you. Yes, it is additional work but the prospects following this experience have been fantastic; secondly, give it your all and say yes to opportunities that come your way.

Have you lived in halls/student housing or at home during your studies?

I lived in halls for first year which was an amazing experience to meet people that are studying other degrees and build friendships. Then moved back home when the pandemic happened.

Have you worked part-time during your degree?

Yes, I have had a few different jobs during my time at university from being a barista, customer assistant to now a pharmacy assistant. Volunteering in relevant areas to my degree has also been key to my success namely Citizens Advice Witness Service and Prison Advice and Care Trust.
