Professor Deborah Youngs Biography
Professor Deborah Youngs is Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education at Swansea University, appointed in September 2022.
She has strategic responsibility for the university’s teaching and learning portfolio, academic quality and standards, and enhancing the student experience. She has oversight of the university’s commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience to all students and is currently leading several key initiatives: curriculum transformation; embedding health and wellbeing into decision making; and advancing student skills and employability to ensure graduates have the best opportunity to thrive in their future careers.
Deborah brings to the post a deep understanding of the institution. First joining Swansea University as a Lecturer in History, she was awarded a personal chair in 2016. She held a number of leadership positions, including Director of Learning & Teaching for Arts & Humanities, before she was appointed DPVC, Deputy Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, where she played a major role in establishing the Faculty (2020-22).
When time allows, she continues to build on her academic career as a historian of late medieval and early Tudor Britain. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, she has published widely on gender, law, ageing and the life course, 1350-1550. Her most recent publications explore women’s litigation in the central law courts of Tudor England.
