Working together to develop talented graduates

Both Bachelor and Masters Engineering students have the opportunity to undertake a paid year-in-industry placement with Tata Steel before their final year of study.

Throughout the placement students can improve their understanding of the business, learn the technical and non-technical skills required for the job and develop their network of contacts in the steel industry which all work to enhance their prospect of employment on graduation.

A trial day where Engineering and HR representatives from Tata Steel base themselves on Bay Campus in order to speak to students about graduate and placement opportunities and conduct informal interviews with them with a view to fast tracking them into the company.

The College of Engineering host an Engineering Skills Day once a year work working closely with Tata Steel to provide students with a variety of employability skills and networking opportunities. The day consists of a panel discussion, mock interviews and networking sessions where students can engage with representatives from the company throughout the day. For the first time, in 2019 Tata Steel also led on a mock assessment centre.

At the start of each academic year representatives from Tata Steel hold their annual employer talk where students can hear from, and network with, Tata Steel’s engineering managers, recent graduates and Year in Industry students (past and present).

Panel discussions are also arranged periodically where speakers from Tata Steel and other businesses discuss a pre-decided theme in front of an audience of students.

Tata Steel attends Swansea University’s annual Careers where students can talk to engineering managers and former graduates who now work for Tata Steel.

Swansea University works closely with Tata Steel to promote graduate opportunities across a variety of Engineering disciplines including Mechanical, Electrical &Electronic and Chemical Engineering, helping communicate opportunities, gather applications and arrange interviews.

Tata Steel sit on different engineering industrial liaison panels in order to communicate the current skills needed in the workplace in order to shape the curriculum. This ensures that courses remain up to date and relevant, putting our students in the best place to gain employment.

Tata Steel regularly hosts organised site visits to the Port Talbot steelworks where engineering students can tour the facilities and learn about the everyday workings of a steelworks in person.
