Harm reduction saves lives slogan on shirt

PROJECT SUMMARY

Since its foundations in the early 20th century, the international drug control regime has pursued the primary objective of suppressing illicit drug use and markets, an objective that has become increasingly punitive and law enforcement focussed over time.  This criminalisation-centred approach has had little impact on drug use or supply, while fuelling health, social, human rights and policy harms in countries around the world.  The GDPO Harm Reduction Project promotes research and analysis on the multiple health, social and justice harms driven by punitive drug laws, as well as policy and law reforms that promote a health and human rights-based approaches to drug policy.
