About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Swansea University of a project that aims to improve Welsh language provisions for practitioners and young people in the youth justice system work closely with Dr Gemma Morgan, Dr Joe Janes and Dr Mabophiwa to collate existing Welsh Language resources and develop a library of resources for all practitioners across Wales. The successful candidate will also consolidate and assist in completing a report and assist with the creation of ‘heat maps’ based on the ratio of the number of Welsh-speaking children to Welsh-speaking staff to support local authorities and the YJB is strategic resource allocations to improve Welsh language resources. The role will involve a combination of remote desk-based work and occasional visits to the Youth Justice facilities across Wales for data collection. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to research outputs.

The project coincides with the Welsh Government’s Cymraeg 2050 Strategy. Core to the project is improving Welsh language provisions in the youth justice system. A key aspect of the project is examining the way in which staff can be supported to become fluent Welsh speakers, as well as improving the visibility of Welsh language in the YJS.  All research will be conducted in Welsh and English.

The role will entail:

Identifying and collating the Welsh language provisions/resources currently available in YOS to develop a Welsh language resource library for practitioners.

Consult with practitioners and young people to gain greater insight into the gaps in Welsh language provisions/resources across Wales.

Consult with practitioners and young people to better understand the challenges of providing/accessing interventions/support in Welsh.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.
