The Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL), currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, has firmly established itself as one of the world’s leading centres for education and cutting-edge research in shipping, trade, commercial, technology, and energy law.
We are delighted to announce that two of our Visiting Fellows have been recognised among the Top 10 Maritime Lawyers Worldwide, as ranked by the Lloyd’s List editorial team in conjunction with Lloyd’s Law Reports—a prestigious acknowledgement of global professional excellence.
Paul Dean (Head of Shipping, HFW | Fellow of the IISTL)
Law firms are typically structured as partnerships and operate through internal democratic processes rather than corporate hierarchies. Paul Dean was first elected Head of Shipping at HFW in 2016, successfully renewed his mandate in 2019, and was re-elected again in early 2025—a clear and sustained vote of confidence in his leadership and vision.
Paul is a highly valued and active member of the Institute, providing exceptional support to our community and making a significant contribution to the education, mentoring, and professional development of our students.
Peter Macdonald-Eggers KC (7 King’s Bench Walk | Fellow of the IISTL)
In 2025, Peter Macdonald-Eggers KC successfully represented a Greek shipowner against German insurance giant Allianz in the high-profile Win Win case. He also serves as a Deputy High Court Judge, and in that role recently ruled that the English courts lacked jurisdiction in a charterparty identity dispute between Marshall Islands-registered shipmanager White Rock and Russian owner Middle Volga.
Peter is an engaged and active Visiting Fellow of the Institute, regularly contributing to IISTL events and generously sharing his expertise and practical insight with our students.
Beyond delivering outstanding legal education and internationally recognised research, the Institute’s mission is to bridge the gap between academia and legal practice. Our Visiting Fellows play a vital role in achieving that goal, bringing real-world experience, professional distinction, and global recognition into the heart of our academic community.
