University in Top 100 LGBT Inclusive Employers

Swansea University has been named in the UK’s top 100 most inclusive employers for LGBT staff for the fifth year in a row.

The annual Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI) was published on January 31 and this year’s Stonewall Top 100 was the largest ever with over 500 organisations taking part. This measures employers’ efforts to tackle discrimination and create an inclusive workplace for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees.

This year Swansea University has maintained its ranking of 47th in the league table of UK employers. We are delighted that we have increased our rankings in participating Education Bodies entrants where Swansea University was ranked sixth in the UK.

Martin Stringer, Pro-Vice Chancellor at Swansea University said: “It’s great to see us retaining our position as a top 100 employer for the fifth time in what is becoming an increasingly competitive index, especially in our centenary year.

“I am proud that Swansea University continues to celebrate our values through our commitment to equality and diversity, making us the type of University we are.”

Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru said: “This year, a record 503 organisations entered the Workplace Equality Index. Four of the 15 education bodies in the UK that make up the top 100 are from Wales, marking Swansea University’s rank of 47th a testament to the ongoing LGBT inclusion and diversity work they work tirelessly to implement.”

Stonewall research has shown that 35% of LGBT people had hidden their identity at work and 18% had been the target of negative comments from colleagues because of their identity.

The Stonewall WEI is a powerful evidence-based benchmarking tool used by employers to assess their achievements and progress on LGBT equality in the workplace. Each participant must demonstrate their expertise in 10 distinct areas of employment policy and practice, including networking groups, career development, training and community engagement.
