Students at Swansea University are set to benefit from a funding boost dedicated to a programme of events for new and returning students from September 2020 to February 2021.
The University and the Students’ Union will target £230,000 of funds to deliver a series of online and on-campus welfare and social activities which will follow the latest social distancing guidance and cover the elongated welcome and arrivals period, as well as the January intake of students.
In order to hold the events in a safe environment, temporary outdoor structures will be introduced on both university campuses which will allow students to attend a varied programme of events, including:
- Freshers’ Fair
- Quiz nights
- Outdoor cinema
- Food markets (including vegan)
- Craft beer nights
A number of welfare events and activities will also be taking place, such as: mental health awareness workshops, meet and greet coffee mornings, culture fairs and regular yoga and meditation sessions.
Professor Martin Stringer, pro-vice-chancellor for education and student experience, said: “Swansea University is ranked 6th in the UK for student satisfaction and we are renowned for providing an exceptional experience to all of our students. Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19 restrictions, we are committed to ensuring that new and returning students can enjoy themselves and socialise in a safe and welcoming environment.
“Getting involved in the vast array of social activities we have planned is a great way for students to meet new people and enjoy their time at university, to promote a positive sense of wellbeing and strike a healthy balance between studying and socialising. These are all important in managing feelings of isolation which are common when starting a new experience but particularly so during a period of uncertainty.”
In order to attend events, students will be required to pre-book, and temperature checks will be carried out. Anyone with a high temperature will not be admitted. This will help ensure that the events adhere to the current Welsh Government guidance, and the online booking method will assist the Test, Trace, Protect scheme.
Ffion Davies, president of Swansea University Students’ Union said: “My student experience at Swansea University was one full of fond and unforgettable memories, and therefore I am very pleased that in these uncertain times the Students’ Union and the University understand the importance of creating an environment where students are able to socialise safely and create their own memories.
“As a Students’ Union we’re delighted that we will be able to host a variety of events and activities which will have something for everyone. The safety of our students, staff, and local residents is paramount and so by bringing students onto campus, we can ensure that events are held in a secure manner and that government guidelines are adhered to. These events will provide a fantastic opportunity for students in accommodation bubbles to get to know each other in a safe place as they set out to create their own special university experience.”
