What’s the difference?

If your aim is to become an Engineer then a postgraduate Engineering Masters could help you qualify at an advanced level.

The MEng and the postgraduate MSc are professional masters degrees in Engineering. They are available in different forms and usually are a pre-requisite to becoming a chartered engineer.

Read through the guidance below, which answers the main questions between an MEng and an MSc qualification.

All Engineering Degrees

MEng

Course length: 4 years advanced undergraduate degree
Credits: 120 credits in each of 4 academic years
Pass Mark: 50% pass mark in all modules
Grading System : 1st, 2:1, 2:2, 3rd

MSc

Course length: 1 year stand-alone postgraduate degree*
Credits: 180 credits across one full year (12 months)
Pass Mark: 50% pass mark in all modules
Grading System: Distinction, Merit, Pass

Accreditation

Chartered Engineer (CEng) status is an internationally-recognised mark of approval by the Engineering Council.

Our MEng schemes are accredited to meet the academic requirements for CEng.

Our MSc schemes are accredited as “approved further learning” to satisfy CEng requirements if you already have an accredited BEng.

Progression / Transfer / Entry requirements

MEng requires a 55% average at the end of Year 2 and for that average to be maintained throughout Year 3.

If eligible, you will be invited once getting your Year 2 results in July/August. The transfer deadline is the end of Year 2 for Tier 4 Visa students and is the end of April for Home/EU students. Tier 4 Visa students should contact the Student Information before April of their 2nd Year to express an interest in transferring; this is so they can be sent all the relevant visa and CAS application information.

Once graduating from a BEng, you can’t do an MEng year.

MSc needs a 2:2 (50-55% average depending on the course) and an application through the Central Admissions Team.
