About

Barry joined the University in 2007 and is the Head of Healthcare Sciences, within the Faculty of Medicine Health and Life Sciences. He has been a qualified Audiologist for over 20 years and is the Programme Director for the BSc Healthcare Science (Audiology) course. The Healthcare Sciences department offer 9 full-time degree programmes across different Healthcare Science disciplines. Barry has an honorary contract with Cwm Taff Morgannwg Health Board as a Clinical Academic. He is a fellow of Higher Education Academy and leads the Audiology service in the Health and Wellbeing Academy, which provides clinical and research opportunities.

SHC137 Study Skills, Health Informatics and Health Service Practice

This module provides an introduction to student skills, learning skills, IT skills, communication skills and elements of Health Informatics that prepares the student for work in the clinical environment of the National Health Service as an Assistant/Associate audiology practitioner.
SHC138 Introduction to Audiology Practice I

This module will introduce students to basic audiological practice.
SHC139 Introduction to Audiology Practice II

This module will expand students understanding of basic audiological practice and supplementary material required, following on from module Introduction to Audiology Practice I.
SHC155 Neurosensory Science

This module provides an introduction to aspects of basic science which are important for the neurosensory science student to learn.
SHC156 Neurosensory Clinical Measurement and Treatment

This module introduces the routine diagnostic tests within Neurosensory Sciences. It will explore the patient pathway and importance of patient centered care, evidence based practice and multidisciplinary team working.
SHC229 Clinical Audiology - Theory and Practice I

This module will provide the students with further knowledge of clinical audiological procedures. This module will introduce assessment and management of the vestibular system, cover the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system in more depth and also introduce further routine audiological assessment techniques.

SHC254 Audiological Practice 1

This module is designed for those students studying the part-time practitioner training programme (PTP) in Healthcare Science (Audiology). It aims to explore the theory and practice of clinical audiology in relation to: - Hearing assessment - Hearing device provision - Vestibular assessment and rehabilitation
SHC326 Clinical Audiology - Theory and Practice II

This module will provide the students with further knowledge of clinical audiological procedures. The module will explore concepts covered in SHC229 Clinical Audiology ¿ Theory and Practice I in more depth, whilst critically exploring new areas of study, such as auditory evoked potentials, otoacoustic emissions and, assessment and management of tinnitus.
SHC331 Healthcare Science Research Project

This module will facilitate the planning, execution and dissemination of a research project with direct relevance to the clinical specialism. Students will be expected to plan, execute and disseminate a literature review, audit or service improvement project.
SHC334 Sensory Aids 2

This module provides an introduction to the treatment options for the hearing impaired. There will be a focus on the prescription and verification of hearing aid provision.
SHGE21 Study Day (Healthcare Science)

This is a themed, standalone study day which will lead to a certificate of attendance. There are no credit points attached to this module.
