About

Sarika Mohan is a Lecturer on the MSc Health Informatics programme at Swansea University and joined the University in 2024.

With a background as a general dentist, Sarika brings four years of clinical experience to her teaching. During her clinical career, she developed a keen interest in health records and the revolutionary role of data in enhancing patient care and health systems.

Sarika holds an MSc in Health Informatics from Swansea University, where she expanded her research to data privacy and security in health apps.

She has a special interest on data visualisation and is actively involved in a research project centred on designing dashboards to facilitate and track data collection.

Taught Modules

PM-344 Capstone Project

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.
PMIM101 Health Informatics in Context

In this module, students will study the skills required by the professional health informatician with an introduction to information governance, including privacy and the maintenance of confidentiality, data security, legislation, ethical considerations, and current UK and global eHealth strategies. Students will also begin to develop their academic skills in literature searching, the critical evaluation of research literature.
PMIM101J Health Informatics in Context

PMIM201 Communications and Coding

In this module, students will learn about communication and communication systems. This will include a study of electronic health records and clinical coding systems. Academic skills are developed and enhanced by an introduction to qualitative research methods.
PMIM301 Using Secondary Health Data

Students will study data quality and management, secondary uses of clinical data, service improvement and clinical audit. Academic skills are developed and enhanced by an introduction to quantitative research methodologies. Students will be introduced to statistical software such as R.
PMIM302 Introductory Analysis of Linked Health Data

This module introduces the topic of linked health data analysis at an introductory to intermediate level. It fills a gap in research training opportunities by combining the principles of health care epidemiology with hands-on practical exercises in the implementation of computing solutions. The module provides students with a theoretical grounding in the classroom on each topic, followed by a training session on the corresponding computing solutions. Students use anonymised linked health data files in the hands-on exercises. The computing component of the module assumes a basic familiarity with computing syntax used in programs such as SPSS and/or R and methods of basic statistical analysis.
PMIM401 Digital Health and Care Systems

In this module, students will study the information systems & technologies used in health informatics projects and their implementation. These include: networks; the Internet; integrated communications; mobile communications; health information systems. Academic skills are further developed by studying how systematic reviews of literature are undertaken. Reflective practice is also addressed.
PMIM501 Knowledge Management

In this module, students will study knowledge management in health care environments. The themes covered will include: clinical decision-making; decision support systems; workflow management; data visualization techniques. Students will study experimental research designs.
PMIM601 Undertaking Health Informatics Research

In this module, students will develop their research skills by learning how to write a research proposal and prepare for the research dissertation.
PMIM701 Health Informatics Research Dissertation

This module builds on the knowledge and skills developed in part one of the course. Students will work independently in order to critically explore and add to the evidence base for a topic of relevance to health informatics.
