Dr Riikka Savolainen joined Swansea University in September 2021 as a Lecturer in Economics.

Riikka is an empirical microeconomist that studies political processes and public policies. Among others, she has studied the impact of political experience on politicians’ policy positions, the impact of refugee immigration on politicians’ redistribution views as well as the impact of electoral disproportionality on internal cohesion of parties. She is also studying the price pass-through of a sin tax for sweet products and the related demand elasticity.

She holds a PhD, MSc and BSc from Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland). She has previously worked as a Lecturer in Economics at Newcastle University and as a Teaching Fellow in Economics at King’s College London, as well as done policy work at the Finnish Treasury. She is a Higher Education Academy Fellow.
