Enhanced Paramedic Practice, BSc (Hons)

Entry onto the BSc programme requires; current employment as a HCPC registered paramedic and evidence of 120 credits at level 5.

Alternatively, paramedics without 120 credits at level 5 can access the BSc on completion of the Diploma in Enhanced Professional Practice. For example, IHCD paramedics can apply for APeL through assessment of their practice portfolio and be awarded credits for their experiential learning by the School of Health and Social Care. The remaining credits will be achieved through the modules within the Enhanced Professional Practice Diploma. 

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching. 

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.  

This is a two year part-time modular course, which will be delivered using blended learning including work based learning and attendance at taught modules if you choose.

The first module ‘Starting your Professional Development’ will include four taught days in the school. Subsequent modules will either be existing taught modules from the postgraduate module catalogue with established assessment methods or work based modules which will be assessed by portfolio.

For the work based modules you will, in conjunction with a practice facilitator and programme manager, develop learning contracts which will be aimed at meeting the learning requirements for the module and practice development needs in your practice areas. Merging theory with experience, enhancing practice arises from learning within the work environment, underpinning and contributing to professional development.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

Some provision

There are opportunities for Welsh speakers to study some elements of this course through the medium of Welsh but there is not yet enough provision to reach 40 credits in each year.

To apply for this course you will need an appropriate diploma or its equivalent from an approved institution and evidence of recent academic study is required or IHCD route to diploma.

Alternatively, evidence of undertaking Continuous Professional Development and possession of a good and relevant professional portfolio can be considered within pre-hospital care or the paramedic profession.

If your first language is not English then you need an IELTS score of 7.0.

This degree increases the range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) options offered by the School of Health and Social Care and is delivered using work-based learning, which enables a flexible approach to study.
