Course Overview

The LLB Law in Practice with Politics degree at Swansea University is a specialised four-year programme that combines the study of law with an in-depth exploration of political systems, governance, and the dynamics of power., while also providing you with valuable workplace exposure.

Grounded in a commitment to academic excellence, and informed by research, the programme combines both theory and practice, enabling you to gain a detailed understanding of how legal frameworks operate within broader political, social, and economic contexts, while critically examining the role of law in shaping governance and public policy.

You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the foundations of legal knowledge, including Contract, Tort, Criminal Law, Public Law, Land Law, Equity and Trusts and EU Law. These core subjects satisfy the academic stage of training required by the Bar Standards Board, and provide a strong basis for those wishing to take the Solicitors Qualifying Examination.

In the third year of your LLB, you will undertake a paid internship with an employer in a legal setting. This will allow you to experience legal practice firsthand, where you can pick up key skills that will be infinitely useful in your future career.

As you progress you can develop specialist expertise in political topics such as global environmental politics and British public policy, allowing you to pursue your interests while developing specialist expertise across two complementary disciplines.

Your Law in Practice with Politics with a Foundation Year Experience

Our Law in Practice with Politics programme places a strong emphasis on equipping you with the skills necessary for professional life. The curriculum is carefully designed to reflect the evolving landscape of legal education, including the changes introduced by the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), while maintaining the value of a traditional law degree.

You will be supported throughout the programme in developing a broad range of skills, such as legal writing, oral presentation and problem-solving. The inclusion of multiple-choice question (MCQ) assessments, which are a key feature of the SQE, further ensure that you are prepared for contemporary professional requirements.

As well as in your Year in Practice, opportunities to gain real-world experience are embedded throughout the degree, including participation in the Law Clinic, where you can provide advice to clients under supervision, and there are opportunities to take part in mooting, negotiation, and client interviewing competitions.

Across each of your three years, you will study topics on foundations of law, giving you an essential grounding in this area. This is complemented by political theory throughout, which increases in intensity as you progress through your degree. Your third year is spent entirely on placement in a suitable legal setting.

In the fourth year you will have the opportunity to select from a wide range of specialised modules covering a diverse range of areas. By this stage, you will have studied all of the foundational subjects and will have the knowledge and understanding to make the most of your optional modules.

The programme employs a variety of teaching and assessment methods to cater to different learning styles and preferences. Teaching methods include interactive lectures, seminars, clinical legal education and experiential learning opportunities. Digital tools such as live polling and quizzes are also used to enhance engagement and participation, ensuring that you can actively contribute to your own learning experience. Assessments include a wide range of approaches, ranging from traditional exams to oral presentations and legal briefings.

The Foundation Year gives you an exciting introduction to higher education, setting you up with the skills, confidence, and knowledge that you’ll need to be successful on your undergraduate degree. It’s ideal if you need a little more support after further education or are returning to education after a gap. The foundation year (level 3) will be delivered by The College, Swansea University (TCSU) on the Bay Campus. Years 2-4 (levels 4-6) will be delivered by the School of Law on the Singleton Campus.
