Your Education and Psychology Experience

Our BSc (Hons) Education and Psychology is an integrated joint honours degree delivered collaboratively by the Department of Psychology and the School of Social Sciences. The programme is built on the understanding that meaningful insight into behaviour and learning requires both psychological perspectives on mind, brain, and behaviour, and educational theories relating to equity, social justice, policy, leadership, and learning.

The degree offers a coherent and progressive programme of study that intentionally connects psychological science with contemporary educational theory and practice. It’s strong research foundations, and emphasis on ethical and socially responsible practice, equip you with the intellectual flexibility, critical awareness, and applied skills needed to address complex social issues in diverse professional and global contexts.

Throughout the programme, you will engage with case studies, real world scenarios, and applied problem solving tasks drawn from both Education and Psychology. This approach helps you connect theory with lived experience and current educational and societal challenges. You will be supported through discussion based learning, scaffolded activities, and guided practice to build confidence and independence in your academic and professional skills.

This programme includes opportunities to undertake a Year Abroad, spent in locations such as the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, or Singapore, enhancing your learning and offering invaluable life experience.

This course also offers you the opportunity to spend a Year in Industry, in the UK or overseas, enabling you to gain valuable workplace experience. The University advocates for paid-only placements, which on average have a salary of over £20,000. Unpaid placements are considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you choose not to take a full Year in Industry, you will still have the option to complete a work placement as part of the Work Placement Module. Many existing placements are offered within the third sector, and you can also self source an organisation aligned to your interests. This experience supports your professional development and helps you apply your learning in a practical context.

Education and Psychology Employment Opportunities

Students can tailor the programme to their career aspirations by selecting from a range of optional modules.

Many occupational areas link closely with psychology, including health, clinical, education, academia, occupational settings, counselling, sports and exercise science, neuroscience, and forensic roles. Psychology graduates are also highly valued within the third sector.

This degree provides a strong foundation in psychological theory, research, and applied skills. Some graduates choose to pursue further specialist training in areas such as clinical, forensic, educational, or sports psychology, while many others go on to build successful careers across a broad range of industries.

Graduates from this course have progressed into roles within health and social care, education, research, public and civil services, and the third sector. Others have moved into careers in management, human resources, marketing, user experience, and data analysis. The analytical, research, communication, and problem solving skills developed during the degree are widely valued by employers beyond traditional psychology pathways.

Whether you continue into postgraduate study or move directly into employment, this degree equips you with flexible, transferable skills that open up diverse career options rather than leading to a single professional route.
