Politics and International Relations, BA (Hons)

Our standard entry requirement is BBB (UCAS tariff points 120) or equivalent. All offers are made following a review of the application form, predicted/achieved grades and subjects, the reference and personal statement. We also accept a range of advanced level qualifications including: International Baccalaureate 32; Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales - grade equivalent to A-level; Access to Higher Education and Open University qualifications, and Extended Project.

For applicants whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.0 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or equivalent English test.

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Apart from a small number of online-only courses, most of our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study. 

 

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.

The programme will support and encourage students to develop their employability skills and professional competencies, such as creative thinking, analytical and data skills, oral communication, group working, and project management skills. These skills are embedded within the curriculum of the programme, through teaching, in practice and via summative and formative assessments.

Mindful of developing students’ professional attributes and enhancing the student experience alongside academic studies, the college offers a range of curriculum-embedded and co-curricular employability opportunities.

Students will be provided with the opportunity to engage in an enhanced university experience through the following employability initiatives: work placements; paid internships as part of the Swansea Paid Internship Network (SPIN) scheme; voluntary opportunities via the Swansea University Week Of Work scheme (WOW); School of Social Sciences led work placements; voluntary work experience opportunities through Discovery; and live access to external placements and internships as advertised via the Swansea University Employability Academy’s Employment Zone website.

Students will also have the opportunity of putting together a portfolio of evidence towards the SEA Award and/or the Discovery Award if undertaking volunteering. Both of the latter awards are accredited and recorded on students’ Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR), which offers them tangible evidence of employability experiences undertaken alongside their studies.

As well as subject specific support by college teaching staff and your personal tutor, the Centre for Academic Success provides courses, workshops and one-to-one support in areas such as:

• Academic writing
• Maths and statistics
• Critical thinking
• Time management
• Digital skills
• Presentation skills
• Note taking
• Revision, memory and exam techniques
• English language skills (if English is not your first language).

In addition, if you have a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), disability, mental health or medical condition, the Centre for Academic Success have Specialist Tutors to support your learning, working alongside the Disability Office and Wellbeing Service to support all your needs and requirements whilst studying at Swansea University.

We care about our students and our aim is to ensure that you achieve the best degree classification. We have a personal tutoring system where you will be allocated a personal tutor. This tutor is a member of academic staff who will offer pastoral support and manage your academic development across your Swansea University experience.

All members of staff have office hours, where they are available to see all students and can be approached for additional support above and beyond the formal contact hours. More generally, we have an “open door” policy where our academic teachers are available to talk to you at any time about any queries or academic concerns you may have.

For students who may require additional support, the Maths and Stats Success (MASS) and/or the Academic Success Programme (ASP) can be accessed via Blackboard. Accessing these programmes will be promoted during induction and also through the first module of the programme. Returning students will also be able to access both services which offer support and guidance to students regarding academic writing and/or help with any maths/stats element in their course. Informal drop in sessions are timetabled for MASS – no appointments are needed and all support is provided by trained students. Students can also self-refer to the ASP service where individual support plans are made; this could include help with essay structure, planning and content as well as guidance about other services that may be necessary (student disability, for example, if an unidentified learning difficulty is suspected).

Additionally, the subject librarians offer support and guidance with referencing. The students undertake a library session in the first module of the programme where they meet the subject librarians.

Spaces are limited and subject to a competitive selection process. In the event you do not secure a semester/year abroad placement, you will be transferred to the standard variant of your degree scheme without a semester or year abroad.

The three-year Politics and International Relations degree offers a semester abroad (through the medium of English), during your second year in a range of partner Universities from January to May in Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA. The semester abroad is an exchange programme so you will pay UK tuition fees and be responsible for accommodation and living costs at the semester partner institution.

The four-year version of the Politics and International Relations degree offers a full year abroad in these partner institutions.

This course offers you the opportunity to spend a Year In Industry, in the UK or overseas*, giving valuable workplace experience. The University advocates for only paid placements which on average have a salary of over £20,000. Unpaid placements are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Although securing a placement is the responsibility of the student, we work with a number of organisations who provide a range of placement opportunities. Students are also supported throughout their application journey with advice, guidance and additional resources. If you are unable to secure a placement by the end of the second year of your studies, you will transfer onto the equivalent degree programme.
