Under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, Swansea University – like all Universities - must give due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. 

In exercising this Duty, the University will have regard to other statutory duties to (a) ensure freedom of speech (The Education (no.2) Act 1986); and (b) have regard to the importance of academic freedom (Education reform act 1988)  

Swansea University is committed both to protecting freedom of speech and academic freedom and to protecting and safeguarding its students and staff from the risk of being drawn into terrorism.  
Swansea Prevent Policy 

Radicalisation is the process where individuals are drawn into extremist or terrorist activities sometimes based on political, social, or religious beliefs. These activities might include promoting or fundraising for extreme or terror groups.  
Signs of exposure to radicalisation could include behavioural changes, changes in the way people speak with others, or having a new circle of friends. Under 18s and Adults at Risk might use extremist terminology, read extremist material, or receive extremist messages.  

If you are concerned about a child or Adult at Risk connected with the University community or are concerned that someone connected with the University may be at risk of radicalisation you should: 

• make a careful note about your concerns, so that you do not forget anything. See the Safeguarding Practice guides for additional support   
• report your concerns to your line manager as soon as you are aware of a concern 
• complete the online reporting form 

The completed form will be automatically sent to the safeguarding team. The concern will then be allocated to a Designated Safeguarding Officer who is trained to deal with concerns and allegations in a sensitive and timely way.
