Thanks to its state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities, the Department’s research is strongly focused on the chemical synthesis of new pharmaceutically active ingredients and drug systems. Available facilities include modern and fully-equipped synthetic chemistry laboratories, which feature microwave synthesizers, GC/Mass spectrometers, HPLC platforms, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, FT-IR microscopy systems, thermal analysers and electronically controlled vacuum ovens. A Bruker Avance III 500 MHz multinuclear NMR spectrometer is available in the Centre for NanoHealth. The Swansea University National Mass Spectrometry Facility (NMSF) provides the Department with full access to its extensive MS instrumentation.
The range of research activities we carry out include:
- Organic synthesis of novel small-molecule compounds and libraries of structural analogues
- Complex synthesis of multi-chiral drug-like compounds
- Scale-up chemistry
- Synthesis of novel polymers for drug delivery solutions
- Synthetic inorganic chemistry
