The State University of New York at Buffalo is a public research university with campuses in Buffalo and Amherst, New York, United States. For the past 16 years, UB has been among the top 25 US institutions enrolling the largest number of international students. Both Buffalo and Amherst are less than 30 minutes from the iconic Niagara Falls. Buffalo is the second largest city in the state of New York and home to over 50 private and public art galleries, most notably the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Burchfield-Penney Art Centre. The university has more than 300 clubs and organizations so there’s something for everyone, and the UB Bulls play some of the top football programs in the nation so make sure you get involved and show your support. Buffalo’s cuisine offers a variety of flavours influenced from cultures across the globe, including Italian, Irish, Jewish, German, Polish, African-American, American, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Mexican, Arab, Indian, Myanmar, Caribbean, soul food, and French cuisine. There will be something to tickle your taste buds round every corner.
It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.
WHO CAN STUDY HERE?
Swansea has a ‘university-wide’ partnership with this university which means that it is open to all subject areas except for Education, Early Childhood Studies, Social Policy or Law.
Spaces are not guaranteed, can be limited and all students on a semester/year abroad programme are subject to a university-wide, competitive selection process.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
COSTS: The cost of living in Buffalo will depend on your accommodation choice, selected optional meal plan and lifestyle. Estimated costs provided by UB per semester are:
- Housing and meals - $7650 per semester
- Books and supplied - $750 per semester
- Fees and health insurance - $3500 per semester
- Personal expenses - $1250 per semester
VISAS: For two semesters of undergraduate exchange, you will need to prove at least $26,300 US dollars (subject to change for 25/26). To apply for a visa, you will need to pay a SEVIS fee of approx $220 plus an application fee of approx $185. In addition, you should factor in the cost of attending a visa interview at the US Embassy (typically in London). More information is available on the US Embassy website. You must allow enough time to complete the visa application and for your visa to be sent to you. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to the USA without it. Your host university will provide you with more information about the application process.
HEALTH INSURANCE: All international students are automatically enrolled in the international health insurance policy which is billed to your UB student account. When combined with other required fees, the cost per semester is $3500
ACCOMMODATION: Due to limited space, the University at Buffalo cannot officially guarantee on-campus housing. However, deadlines have been set to give exchange applicants the best chance for securing an on-campus room. Generally, exchange students who apply for on-campus housing before May 10th will receive an offer for an on-campus room. The costs of housing and meals for one semester is approx $7650
