About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Swansea University as a Research Technician supporting the Welsh Cockle Flesh Analysis Study, a Welsh Government-funded project investigating seasonal and spatial variation in cockle meat yield and reproductive condition across Welsh fisheries. The evidence generated will help improve understanding and management of this economically and ecologically important resource.

Based within Biosciences in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, you will play a central role in the consistent processing and analysis of cockle samples collected monthly from sites across Wales. Working closely with the Project Lead, technical colleagues, project partners and Welsh Government, you will undertake shell measurements, weighing and dissection, prepare tissues for histological assessment, and support microscopy and digital imaging. You will also ensure that samples, data and laboratory records remain accurate throughout the study.

This role would suit a practically skilled and highly organised bioscientist who enjoys hands-on laboratory work and takes pride in producing accurate, reliable results. Experience of biological sample processing, cockle and bivalve dissection and histological techniques are essential. You will be confident managing competing priorities, working to standard operating procedures and maintaining a safe and well-organised laboratory environment. There may also be opportunities to support occasional intertidal field activities and provide practical guidance to students or colleagues undertaking related research.

You will join a friendly and collaborative team with expertise spanning aquatic biology, fisheries, aquaculture, animal health and marine conservation. Swansea’s excellent laboratory and aquatic research facilities provide a stimulating environment in which to apply and further develop your technical skills while contributing directly to research with practical relevance for the sustainable management of Welsh cockle fisheries.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.
