Swansea University law student Mari Watkins has beat competition from across the country to be named as a finalist in a law competition.

Second year LLB Law student Mari triumphed against law students and trainees from all over the UK to be named among the 10 finalists for National Accident Helpline’s Future Legal Mind Award 2020.

The competition has been running for six years and past winners have gone on to become respected barristers and solicitors.

In her competition entry Mari focused on land law, looking at the various approaches throughout the UK and arguing that people should have “a right to roam” outdoors without fear of legal action for trespass.

The 19-year-old hopes to become a barrister so she can use her legal voice to challenge issues around land law.

Mari said: “I’m ecstatic to be a finalist. I am glad that my essay has been chosen and pleased that more people will become aware of the issues regarding access to land.”

Tom Fitzgerald, Managing Director of National Accident Helpline, said: “Mari has a specific interest in land law and it was clear to our judges that she feels very passionately about her chosen vocation. We wish her the best of luck for the final.”

Each of the Future Legal Mind finalists has recorded a video explaining why they should be named as the winner. To watch Mari’s video, filmed outdoors in rolling countryside, visit www.national-accident-helpline.co.uk/future-legal-mind.

Mari will find out in May who will become the winner of Future Legal Mind. The winner will receive a £2,000 prize fund and will be mentored by experienced lawyers.
