The Shipping & Trade teaching team at Swansea understand the importance of students developing their employability and networking opportunities alongside their studies. To that end, they tailor their approach to employability to suit the unique needs of each of their cohorts.
This year's second employment trip took IISTL’s students to London's Minster Building, where they were invited by the specialist maritime law firm, Tatham Macinnes LLP. They were given a talk on various subjects, including what types of claims their lawyers face on a daily basis, and what it takes to work within their firm.
Students were able to engage in discussion with Managing Partner, Alex Macinnes, and with Swansea University alumni currently working at the firm (Ashlee Xi, a solicitor who first joined Tatham Macinnes as an intern, and paralegal, Edmundo Deville). They offered useful guidance and insight on the students' potential careers, responding to the questions only those in the industry could accurately provide answers to.
Following the visit, one of IISTL’s employability directors, Professor George Leloudas, commented:
"We are grateful to Tatham Macinnes for taking time out of their busy schedules to talk to our students. It was an added bonus and a real pleasure to see just how well our alumni are doing. It is not only personally very rewarding, but it shows our current students what they can achieve if they tap into their full potential at Swansea.
We take employability very serious at Swansea and it is the combination of our and students’ efforts that ensures that most of our graduates end up in employment in shipping, insurance, energy, banking, IP and more recently in legal (commercial) tech sectors”.
