Swansea University has again secured the prestigious Green Flag Award which recognises excellence in grounds management and development.

The Green Flag Award scheme is the international mark of quality for parks and outdoor spaces and highlights the University’s commitment to creating and maintaining sustainable green spaces that are safe, welcoming and open to all.

Following feedback from students and staff, the University’s Estates and Campus Services team has been hard at work breathing new life into the outdoor spaces at the Bay and Singleton campuses.

These efforts have included extensive planting schemes designed to enrich the campus’ biodiversity, the creation of new outdoor spaces for relaxation and study, and the installation of stunning murals and artworks that celebrate the University’s unique history.

Additionally, several heritage buildings on campus are in the process of being carefully refurbished.

This ongoing project to enhance the outdoor environment has required close collaboration between the Grounds, Campus Operations, Projects and Sustainability teams, who are passionate about sustainability and being nature positive.

Head of Campus Operations Michelle Dene said: “We are thrilled to receive the Green Flag Award, which is testament to the hard work and commitment of a number of our teams.

“Maintaining and improving our beautiful outdoor spaces is a huge undertaking and collaborative working has been key to us securing the Green Flag for the seventh year running.

“We’re keen now to build on this collaborative approach to success by involving students, staff and the wider community in our efforts to maintain, manage and develop our stunning grounds which we feel play such an important part in the local and wider community.”

Registrar and Chief Operating Officer Niamh Lamond, added: “We are incredibly lucky at Swansea to have two campuses set in such beautiful and inspiring locations.

“We’ve made some really positive enhancements to our outside spaces this year to improve the experience on campus for our students, staff and the wider community.

“Thanks to the incredibly hard work of our Estates and Campus Services staff, the grounds are really flourishing, and we want to ensure they remain open and accessible to all.”
