Swansea University has been honoured after thousands of park users across the UK voted for their favourite green spaces.
Keep Britain Tidy has named its Singleton Campus as one of its People’s Choice award winners following a national vote.
The special recognition comes after the site achieved the prestigious Green Flag Award quality mark, which recognises and accredits high quality and well managed green spaces, earlier this year.
Grounds staff maintain the gardens and shared areas to benefit staff, students and the wider community at both its Singleton and Bay campuses. They have also carried out extensive conservation work including updating bug hotels and bird boxes, having dedicated vegetable growing areas and planting wildflowers and fruit trees as well as sharing expertise with local schoolchildren.
Head of Campus Operations Michelle Dene said: “We are absolutely thrilled that our Singleton Park Campus has been voted one of the UK’s top ten Green Flag parks. This is a testament to the dedication of our Grounds, Sustainability and Operational teams and volunteers who work tirelessly, in all weathers, to maintain and improve this beautiful outdoor space for everyone to enjoy.
“Spaces like these are vital for our students, staff and communities, and we’re proud to see that our efforts have been appreciated by so many people.”
The 10 People’s Choice winners are among a record breaking 2,250 parks and green spaces that achieved the Green Flag Award this year.
Green Flag Award manager Paul Todd MBE said: “The People’s Choice awards are our way of helping the public recognise the hard work done by the thousands of parks staff and volunteers up and down the country.
“Swansea University and the other nine winning sites represent some of the UK’s hardest working individuals and groups working within our highest quality parks – and this has clearly been recognised and appreciated by the public.”
Parks provide crucial benefits to people and their pets including safe spaces to exercise, play, and relax. They also play an important role in providing habitat for wildlife and climate change resilience.
