STAR Days

STAR (Study Tips to Achieve Results) Days are primarily focused on providing students with techniques to prepare successfully for GCSE exams.  Topics  cover time management and revision planning, understanding exam questions and revision techniques.

Half day or full day sessions are available for groups of 20-40 pupils, and ideally take place on campus but can also be held at school.  Pupils work in small groups with a current university student and there is an opportunity to discuss pathways options after their GCSEs.

“The Year 11 pupils really appreciated the course, it was specific to books they were studying for GCSE and provided them with the pathway, skills and the help to look for the examiner’s requirements to create good answers to specific questions, plus the fact that it was from another source other than their teachers.” Teacher from Birchgrove Comprehensive School

“The whole day ran smoothly, all the pupils knew what they were doing and when. All the pupils were focused and engaged with all the tasks. Many of the pupils have said they have learnt something and will use their booklets again and again when it comes to revising.” Teacher from Cwrt Sart Community Comprehensive School

“It has been a very useful day, and for someone like me who isn't very good with preparation, it's been very helpful.” Pupil from Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera

Taste of Uni Life

Campus-based, subject specific workshops and tasters are offered to schools throughout the year.  Recent topics have included Biological Science, Engineering, Medicine, Creative Writing, Law, Enterprise and Classics.  Bespoke workshops can be devised by drawing on the breadth of expertise across the University if a school would like something specific.

These curriculum-enhancing days demonstrate to pupils what a subject is like to study at university and involve using subject specific equipment and resources whilst working with university lecturers and students.

“The sessions were excellent and engaged the pupils. Also, the sessions were excellent in providing ‘new’ learning linked to exams.  This day has been extremely beneficial to our pupils. It will aid their learning in school and facilitate their education."  Teacher from Dylan Thomas Community School
