Our Vision
Our vision is to conduct world-leading research across natural sciences, combining fundamental and applied science to provide a well-rounded research environment.
Our Environment
Bioscience supports subject-specific and interdisciplinary investigator led, basic and applied research. We are a vibrant community of 39 faculty members including 29 research (Category A) staff submitted to REF 2021, which has increased by double to those submitted in the previous REF. The Department has significantly grown with 36% of our appointed staff being ECRs. We have achieved a sustained growth in research awards, with an average 122% increase in annual grant funding. We also have invested £8.1m in biological research infrastructure and research facilities, which includes an 18 metre research vessel.
Our Outputs
We have produced over 750 publications in international peer-reviewed journals. which includes 32 papers in Nature, Science and PNAS. Our publications have been cited over 15600 times, with 23% in the top 10% of the most cited publications worldwide.
Our Impact
Our research is helping land and property owners to manage and control invasive Japanese knotweed growth. Working with the aquaculture industry, we have facilitated the development of locally adapted lumpfish (also called cleanerfish) which are used to manage sea lice infestation of farmed salmon. Our research has informed The European Commission on the safety of Metarhizium brunneum, a fungal biopesticide, which can be used on crops instead of chemical pesticides.
