• ASC351 Who’s, in, who’s out? Inclusion and Exclusion: Socio/Criminological Perspectives

  This module will engage students in a critical examination of the processes of exclusion and inclusion in contemporary society. Designed to enable students to apply and appreciate both sociological and criminological `lens¿ (including their overlap, distinct elements and complementarity, the module will examine and invite students to consider inclusion and exclusion in relation to topical social issues.

• ASP220 Poverty and Social Justice

  This module explores how the tackling of poverty, inequality and social exclusion relates to questions of social justice ¿ and to the ways these questions are addressed through relevant policy in social security and other areas. We assess the impacts of contemporary policies in tackling poverty and the social exclusion of particular social groups. We explore the ways in which such policies are informed by prevailing political philosophies and ideological assumptions. We track the development of relevant policy agendas over recent decades, from the birth of the New Right through to the present day. We investigate the meanings and significance of these changes, in light of shifting assumptions about the roles and responsibilities of the state, the market and the individual

• ASP301 Principles of Social Policy

  This module analyses the key values and principles underpinning social policies in Western democracies. The module discusses the social construction of social problems and theoretical accounts of power and hegemony. It critically examines the contributions of the work of influential contemporary theorists with respect to the concepts of justice, rights, needs, liberty, equality, diversity and citizenship. The module also considers the role of these concepts in shaping the contours of social policy and the relationship between the individual and the state.

• ASP356 The Family and Children: Ethics and Policy

  This module critically explores why the family and children matter to social policy, through an analysis of various contexts in which relevant issues arise, and of the implications of how they have been tackled in recent policy across a range of policy spheres in Wales, the UK and beyond. Throughout, there is a focus on questions of ethics and social justice. Thus it addresses why families, parenting and the interests of children raise pressing and challenging questions concerning rights, responsibilities and the nature of well-being ¿ and provides critical tools with which to assess how these questions have been answered in social policy.

• SHHM16 Ethics and Philosophy of Social Research

  This module will address the ethics of conducting social research. The discussion of research ethics will include, but not be limited to, informed consent and how to protect the anonymity of research participants. Discussions will also address the limits of researchers' obligations to protect anonymity and confidentiality, along with taking a more detailed look at the process of applying for university research ethics approval. Philosophical problems associated with conducting social research will be explored - asking questions such as 'How is our understanding of others limited? ''Are my research findings objective?¿.

  This module introduces and examines some of the fundamental theoretical approaches to ethics in relation to examples taken from healthcare. It also considers the nature of moral judgements and the relation between ethics and the law.
