Your Career: I am currently Head of Vocational Studies at a Welsh Language secondary school in the Cynon Valley. I am part of a team that runs accessible courses to students, offering them more than one way of being assessed and opening up career opportunities for them beyond our walls.
Summary of your Swansea University experience: My experience was fantastic at Swansea University! They supported the Welsh language brilliantly, which was important to me as a first language Welsh speaker. I really loved the location, and how fantastic the staff were (everywhere, from lecturers to cafe staff!).
What are your top 3 favourite things about Swansea: The diversity and inclusivity. I met people from all walks of life, with different ambitions, religions, experiences and outlooks - and this really developed me as a person. The location - the beaches, the shops and restaurants, and the entertainment! The Opportunities - there are so many opportunities, and not just academically. There are so many social aspects to life at Swansea, from sporting clubs to 'curry club' (which I really enjoyed!)
Why did you choose to study your degree at Swansea? I was told by multiple sources that it was a great place to study Politics and International Relations and they were all right! I also loved the facilities, the accommodation, and the main campus really sold it to me! The beaches and beauty of Swansea and surrounding areas was also a huge draw.
Would you recommend Swansea University to someone thinking of going to University? I absolutely would, especially now as there has been so much investment in the University since I left in 2005. You will be in a superb location, with so much opportunity for growth, both personally and academically. It will be the best decision you ever made!
How did your degree prepare you for your career? Becoming a graduate meant that so many doors opened for me. In the first instance I was eligible to apply for a graduate scheme with the retailer Boots in 2008 and went on to a successful career in retail management until 2012. I then decided to become a teacher and as I was already a graduate, I only needed to complete a PGCE course, which took just 9 months. I wouldn't have been able to accomplish this without my BA from Swansea University. In 2017 I also studied for a Masters in Education, which I was able to do as I already had my BA.
What advice would you give to students who want to pursue your career? Go for it. Working with young people is highly rewarding - no two days are the same! You meet so many characters, and it's very fulfilling being able to help them. This is my 14th year as a teacher, and I have seen pupils I've taught go on to successful careers which makes my heart full!
