Your Career: Overseeing all quality-related activities within the production process of high-performance supercars at Gordon Murray Automotive. This includes ensuring smooth transitions from the concept and R&D stages into manufacturing, as well as managing quality standards throughout development, pre-production and production phases.
Your Swansea University experience: I loved living on Bay Campus, being right by the beach, close to national parks and part of the Snowsports and Powerlifting clubs. I also had the opportunity to go on exchange to Texas A&M, which broadened my horizons and made my time even more memorable.
What are your top 3 favourite things about Swansea: My favourite thing about Swansea is how close it is to the Brecon Beacons. Having a national park so close makes it incredibly easy to escape into nature, whether hiking, exploring waterfalls or just having a break, it gives the whole area a sense of adventure.
I also loved having so many bays nearby for surfing. The variety of beaches means there’s always somewhere with the right conditions, and nothing beats finishing a day with sunset surfing.
Finally, the high street has everything you need in one place. It’s practical, lively, and full of character, from shops and cafes to places to meet friends or pick up essentials. It makes day-to-day life simple and adds to the friendly, down-to-earth feel of the city.
Why did you choose to study your degree at Swansea? I wanted a university close to nature but still connected to a lively city, and Swansea offered the perfect balance. The brand-new engineering buildings and clear investment in facilities also really impressed me. That combination of environment, community, and modern resources convinced me it was the right choice.
Would you recommend Swansea University to someone thinking of going to University? I would definitely recommend Swansea University. It offers a rare mix of coastal living, friendly community and strong academic facilities. Being so close to beaches, national parks and green spaces creates an amazing quality of life, while the campus and city have everything you need. The atmosphere is welcoming, the opportunities to get involved are huge, and the balance between study and lifestyle is genuinely special. It’s a place where you can grow academically while enjoying an environment that keeps you motivated and inspired.
Did you apply through Clearing? Yes, and the process was much smoother than I expected. The staff were friendly, reassuring and quick to answer my questions, which made the whole experience far less stressful.
How did your degree prepare you for your career? My degree prepared me extremely well for my career. Although I moved into a different engineering sector, the course gave me strong transferable skills that made the transition smooth and gave me confidence. I developed a solid foundation in problem-solving, data analysis and understanding complex systems, all of which are essential in quality engineering. The practical lab work and project based teaching helped me learn how to approach technical challenges methodically, work effectively in teams and communicate findings clearly. The emphasis on precision, safety and regulatory awareness in medical engineering has also been invaluable in an industry where high standards and attention to detail are crucial.
What advice would you give to students who want to pursue your career? Focus on building strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Get comfortable with data, root cause analysis and understanding how systems fit together. Any engineering degree can lead you there, so make the most of projects, labs and teamwork to develop practical experience. Exposure to real industry environments through placements or internships makes a huge difference. Most importantly, stay curious and open-minded. Quality engineering suits people who enjoy improving processes, asking questions, and paying attention to detail.
