We’re so excited to announce that we’ve teamed up with Tir Awel and The Environment Centre to launch The University Veg Hub. You can now pick up fresh, locally grown veg boxes on Singleton Campus every Friday from Taliesin. There are 4 veg boxes available ranging from a mini box (6 vegetables) to a family sized box (10 vegetables) and two fruit boxes. Prices vary according to one off purchases or subscription.
Tir Awel do not use any pesticides and let the produce grow naturally. Not only are you reducing your carbon footprint associated with food miles, you’re eating seasonally which is much better for the environment. This scheme is a win-win for the environment and your health and the local economy. 'Lettuce' re-think the way food is grown so that nature and people benefit. How does collection work?
Lauren, the farm manager at Tir Awel delivers the boxes to Singleton Campus on a Friday afternoon. You will be able to collect your box between 2PM and 4:30PM on Friday afternoons in the main entrance of Taliesin. Tir Awel will send an email to let you know your box is ready for collection. Please ensure that you will definitely be able to collect your box by 4:30PM. There will be a volunteer on the stall to greet you and make sure you receive the correct box. In the name of sustainability, we ask that you bring your own bag to take away the contents of your box. We re-use all packaging that we can, so when you return to the collection point again, please bring all packaging that is in a decent condition back to us (paper/plastic bags, punnets etc).
Will the boxes be 100% Tir Awel’s produce?
Tir Awel aims for as much as possible of the produce in the boxes to be grown by them. Part of their mission, though, is to link up with other local growers and food producers to build a flexible, mutually supportive and resilient food system in our area. To them, this doesn’t mean being the best veg box scheme with the most customers and the biggest profit. Tir Awel will often team up with other growers in the area to swap produce for each other’s boxes, help them out if one of them has had a crop failure, and share gluts of something the other hasn’t grown that year. They’ll also buy in things like chestnut mushrooms that require highly specialised conditions to grow. All of their fruit is bought in, much of it from Europe (it would be pretty tricky to do a year-round local fruit box!), though of course they prioritise local growers when the season is right.
Can I pause or cancel my subscription?
Yes, it’s really easy to pause if you are going away, or if you’ve got a build-up of veg you need to use. Equally, if you need to cancel for a while, Tir Awel have a no-contract scheme, so you can cancel with no further obligation. All they ask is that you do so before 8pm the Tuesday before delivery. This is so that they don’t harvest or order produce that will go to waste.
