Course Overview

Explore the ideas shaping our world with a BA in American Studies and Politics. This dynamic degree blends the study of the United States to its culture, history, literature, and politics-with British and European politics, public policy, political theory, and philosophy. You will study urgent global challenges such as racial justice, democracy, globalisation, conflict, and sustainability, gaining the tools to understand and influence the world around you.

From the American Revolution to contemporary US pop culture, and from classical political thought to modern-day debates on war, peace, and security, you’ll have the flexibility to customise your degree around your passions. You also have the chance to study for a year or a semester in the United States, discovering the subject first hand.

Your American Studies and Politics Experience

We offer varied and flexible course content, so you can shape your American Studies and Politics degree to your own interests.

Topics covered in the degree include American film, music, race, gender, migration and urbanisation, social, economic and military history, terrorism, or civil rights and political protest; conflict and peace, democracy, politics, philosophy, international relations, international security, public policy or political economy.

Our teaching is informed by our world-leading interdisciplinary research in a wide range of subject areas, from civil rights, US foreign policy, and the Cold War to the American Civil War, contemporary US fiction, and the Harlem Renaissance.

This programme includes opportunities to undertake a Semester or Year Abroad, spent in locations such as the USA and Canada, enhancing your learning and offering invaluable life experience. 

All of our students have the option of study abroad. Our 4-year programmes offer a full-year abroad and we also offer a semester abroad for 3-year degrees at one of our partner universities in the United States. Semester abroad is an exchange programme so you will pay UK tuition fees and be responsible for accommodation and living costs at the semester partner institution.

This course also offers you the opportunity to spend a Year in Industry, in the UK or overseas*, enabling you to gain valuable workplace experience. The University advocates for paid-only placements, which on average have a salary of over £20,000. Unpaid placements are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Although securing a placement is the responsibility of the student, we work with a number of organisations who provide a range of placement opportunities. Students are also supported throughout their application journey with advice, guidance and additional resources. If you are unable to secure a placement, you will transfer onto the standard degree programme.
