Our Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme is unique in Wales and one of just a handful of similar programmes of medical study in the UK open to graduates of any discipline from the UK, EU and overseas.

As a small and supportive medical school, we are able to ensure you benefit from close contact with teaching staff, a strong sense of community, and early exposure to patients from your first term.

Your Medicine Experience

The Graduate Entry Medicine programme is an intensive and diverse combination of oncampus teaching that includes:

  • Lectures and Tutorials
  • Case-based learning
  • Integrated Clinical Methods
  • Anatomy and Clinical Skills

Throughout our Medicine (Graduate Entry), MBBCH, you will be part of a student-centred, inclusive and experiential approach to medical education. This gives you the space and support to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to become a doctor who can adapt to the realities of modern healthcare.

As this programme is research-led, you will benefit from drawing directly on the expertise of academic and clinical staff who are active researchers and contributors to medical scholarship. This approach fosters intellectual curiosity, scientific literacy, and a commitment to evidence-based practice.

You will be able to progressively apply theoretical knowledge to complex clinical contexts, mirroring the transition from student to practising clinician. By the end of your studies, you will be scientifically grounded, clinically competent, but also ethically guided, reflective, and prepared for for a career defined by life-long learning.

Clinical Placements will take place at NHS sites including hospitals, GP surgeries and community health facilities, this ensures that you experience the social determinants of health first-hand and appreciate the importance of primary care and preventative medicine in addressing health inequalities.

Medicine Employment Opportunities

On successful completion of the programme, you will graduate with an MBBCh degree from Swansea University, enabling you to progress to the UK Foundation Programme for newly qualified doctors, where you will begin training in a clinical environment.

The GEM programme is designed to develop a broad range of transferable skills and attributes that support an entrepreneurial mindset and enhance career prospects across both clinical and nonclinical pathways. Through a curriculum grounded in problemsolving, critical thinking, innovation, leadership, and communication, you will be equipped to contribute proactively to the future of healthcare delivery, service redesign, and patientcentred care.

You will also develop the ability to work creatively and collaboratively within complex systems, gaining experience in evidencebased innovation, digital health, sustainability in healthcare, and quality improvement. These areas provide a strong foundation for future clinical entrepreneurship, policy influence, and academic leadership. Engagement with research projects, audit, and Learning Opportunities in Research and Scholarship (LORS) further builds analytical and investigative skills applicable across a wide range of professional contexts.
